Employment rant

I may have to make a choice between keeping my job and going on this trip. Unfortunately for them if it comes to that I’m choosing the trip. I’m going and nothing is stopping me. I’m going I don’t care. My boss gave me a off the record heads up and the owner’s first reaction was a straight up no without even looking at the proposal. I finally told him why I want to go so badly and said I would ask for a 3 month leave of absence if it is not approved but I get the feeling that won’t be granted – so it’s one or the other and if that is so, than I choose the latter. It’s not like I have anything here to stay for (other than friends) but I have acquaintances all over the US and some of them have offered me a place to stay on my travels…so why not just keep going? Keep traveling… screw it.

I'm damn good at what I do and I'm passionate about it...Yes that can find someone just as good - maybe - but not for the same pay.... I'm going with or without them.

I love my job but I love myself more!

I went in and approached the travel subject in complete professionalism and the compromise was if I go I leave this weekend and I have to be back mid February. That means I have to have both gas money & a laptop to purchase by this weekend.I have no idea how I will do it, but I will do it!

I'll find a way to make it happen!

Years ago I was invited on a 24-day wilderness trip leaving in mid-October. I had one week of vacation left for the year and three more weeks for the next year beginning in January. I told them I would take all my vacation time then and not take a vacation the following year. I asked for a leave of absence. I offered to take it unpaid. I had worked for this company for 10 years. To all of those options they said no.

So, I quit. The trip was fabulous and I have never regretted it.

When I returned they still had not filled my position and they offered me my job back. I said no. I found work doing the same thing with a better company and way cooler people. They eventually found someone for my old position, but her old company wanted her back so badly that they gave her more money and a promotion. She returned to her old company. My original position was offered to me again with no discussion about how valuable I was or any offer of better compensation. I said no again.

I was with the new company for at least 7 years and that eventually spun off to jobs with other companies.

Remember that everything happens for a reason. If the trip is meant to be it will all come together for you. Bon voyage, Sierra!

I am always surprised how employers often end up thinking that they are doing us a favor by giving us a job.
The truth is if they didn't need somebody to do the job they would not have you there.
It is a fair business deal: they get the job done, and you get paid to do it. They choose the person who they think is best for the job, not hte person they think needs the job the most...Who are they kidding? They are not doing anybody any favor!!! It is a fair deal,or at least it should be.

We work so we can live, we don't live so we can work!!!!

    Good luck.
